Batu Caves and Cameron Highland

It as been three weeks since I arrived in Malaysia. Now using taxis or seeing cars on the wrong side of the road (they drive on the left side of the road) is normal for me.

At the residence we are taking habits : the colocation is more and more easy, we go to the swimming pool on the evening, we share taxis with the other students… When we are together, we talk a mix of French, English and even some words of German.

At UPM, lectures have really begun and we have our first exams on Monday. It is still hard to recognize people that are in our lectures whereas all the people of the faculty knows who we are what can bring some awkward moments. For lunch, they are many places to eat like self service of cooked meats and fishes with rice and a plate is around 1-2€. We are trying to take Malay lectures but it seems hard for now as all the classes are full.

On the 17, we went to Batu Caves. Those huge caves are a Hindu sanctuary. One of the cave has golden statues that tell the story of a Hindu goddess.

The other, the biggest one as at least 2 temples and we had to climb 272 stairs to admire them. It worth it even though I was disappointed to see that some shops are installed in the cave.

Last week-end with my French friends and a German guy, we went to Cameron Highland. It is the mountainous part of the country so we had only 20°C what was such a relief compared to the 32°C at KL. We took a bus, it was 4 hours to reach the main city of Cameron Highland. The bus had really comfortable and large seats so it wasn’t a bad trip.  We arrived on Friday at 12 and we ate in a very good Indian restaurant. Then we went to our accommodation. It was an apartment with 3 bedrooms but it had many flows : we couldn’t close some of the windows, there were cockroach and mysterious tracks of iron on the carpet. Fortunately, it was only for two nights. At night, we went to a night market where we ate corn, a really good burger even though there was no cheese and strawberry with chocolate. We had to hide twice because of the rain but we will keep good memories.

On Saturday we had order a tour. A guide showed us some of the most fabulous places in Cameron Highland. We went to a butterfly farm, to a local museum, to a Chinese temple. The most remarkable were the tea plantations. We could see tea plants all around us. We also went to the fabric where we have seen old machines to make tea and we tasted some great tea.

Last, we went to jungle. It was beautiful but, as tourists destroyed the forest, they build some kind of bridges to cross the jungle and not damage it.

On Sunday on the advice of friends, we did a 2 hours trek in the jungle (on the real floor this time). We all loved it but it was really not easy as we had to climb up or down quite often. It was the first day of the weekend without rain so we decided to take a nap on the grass but we had under estimate the power of the sun and we burned…

This weekend, we are staying at home to work for our exams. If the weather allows us to, we might go to beach but nothing sure.
